This has behaved the market in 2016 and these are the best-selling cars

We are at the beginning of the month, and that means that we already have the registration data for the month that we left behind. But this data is especially important when we enter in January, as we left behind last year and we can make a thorough balance on the behavior of the 2016 automotive sector in Spain, so we will focus mainly on the data of the year.

The records do not lie, and this 2016 has been the best year since we realized the deep economic crisis we are still in. Despite this, the data for 2008, the first full year in which our economy was already affected, have not been improved. In total, 1,147,007 cars were registered in 2016, representing growth of 10.9% compared to 2015. In December, 96,886 cars were registered, 9.3% more than in December 2015.

By channels, all show positive data. The private channel, the most important, grew 6.7% compared to the 12 months of 2015, having registered 612,841. It is not a very big growth, but seeing positive data on sales to individuals is always great news. For its part, the company channel has increased its sales by 15.9%, with 327,974 units registered. The data from the rental companies are also good, with an improvement of 16.8% and a volume of 206,192 trades.

We go through the records by brands. These values have been very tight in the Top3, but finally it has been Renault who has taken “the cat to the water” with 90.503 units sold. Opel has followed closely with 89,383 registrations. Stepping on the heels of the German mark has been his compatriot Volkswagen, selling 89,012 cars. In fourth and fifth place, although more distanced, Peugeot and Seat finished after delivering 83,523 and 77,643 vehicles respectively.

We can highlight the growth of some automobile companies, such as BMW with a 23.5% increase, Fiat with improvements of 29.4%, Honda with 21.1%. Jeep increases its registrations by 33%, while Mercedes does the same by registering a 20.5% more than in 2015. Nor do we forget about Suzuki or Volvo that, although they do not obtain a great volume, have commercialized a 62,7 and a 26% more than in 2015.

Looking at sales by models, the first position has also been somewhat adjusted. The best-selling vehicle in our country has been the Citroën C4, with 34,615 units sold. They have followed the Seat Leon, with 33,653 registrations, and the Ibiza, with 31,836 sales. The Volkswagen Golf and the Opel Corsa, with 28,678 and 26,897 marketers, respectively, are still down. Anyway, it is necessary to take into account that Citroën also counts within the “range C4” to the C4 Cactus, C4 Picasso and C4 Aircross, in addition to the compact. Volkswagen also counts Sportsvan Golf.

As for the market share by the type of fuel, diesel continues to gain. Gas-fueled passenger cars accounted for 56.8% of the cars sold in 2016. Gasoline vehicles, which reached their peak in June, finally accounted for 40.2%. On the other hand, only 3% of the cars sold in Spain during the last 12 months have been electric and hybrid.
